Legal Services for Singapore-Based NRIs

Non-Resident Indians living in Singapore may have property, inheritance, family, contractual or other legal interests in India. Managing these matters from overseas can involve documentation, communication with family members or representatives, Indian authorities and, where necessary, court proceedings.

Eagle Law & Integrity (ELI) assists Singapore-based NRI clients with legal matters arising in India, including property disputes, succession and inheritance issues, civil litigation, documentation and representation before appropriate courts or forums. As an NRI legal advisor for clients in Singapore, ELI understands the legal issue, examines the relevant records, and explains the available procedural and legal options before further action is taken.

Documentation and Authorised Representation

Singapore-based NRIs often need help with

  • Power of Attorney documents

  • Applications and litigation documents
  • Execution of documents outside India for use in India
  • Review of execution, authentication, stamping and other applicable formalities based on the document’s purpose and circumstances.

What is Different for NRIs Living in Singapore

  • Singapore court judgments: Singapore is a “reciprocating territory” under Section 44A of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908. A money decree from a superior court of Singapore can be executed in India directly, by filing a certified copy in the appropriate Indian court – without starting a fresh suit.
  • Signing documents in Singapore: Documents for use in India are generally notarised and then apostilled by the Singapore Academy of Law. Singapore joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2021.
  • Serving court papers: Singapore joined the Hague Service Convention with effect from 1 December 2023.
  • Family matters: see the AKT website.

How ELI Assists Singapore-Based NRI Clients

NRI legal matters can require coordination between a client residing overseas and persons, documents, authorities, or proceedings located in India. ELI addresses the Indian legal and procedural aspects while keeping the client’s overseas circumstances in view.

The firm’s assistance may include:

  • Reviewing facts and available documents before advising on possible legal options.
  • Identifying applicable Indian statutes and prescribed requirements.
  • Assessing jurisdiction and the appropriate legal forum.
  • Reviewing documentation and authorised representation requirements.
  • Advising on negotiation, settlement or litigation where appropriate.
  • Assisting with representation before competent Indian courts and forums.

This is particularly useful where a client needs to manage an Indian legal matter without being in India.
